While diving into the issue of modesty, I’ve caught onto a deeper issue within the Christian church, it’s seemingly become second nature to bicker back and forth, judge another’s outfit, and throw scripture into one another’s face.
Some say bikinis are modest, others argue against
Some say crop tops are okay, others disagree.
But rather than making room for conviction, we’re very quick to throw around “well God only cares about my heart” and while there is a need to fruitfully check our brothers and sisters in Christ, we’ve completely missed the point:
If we continue to cling to our OWN personal definition of modesty, then use those same ideals to judge others: what does that say about the posture of our hearts?
I’ll be the first to admit, I’ve fallen into that very loop:
“She claims Christianity, but dresses like that??” Or maybe you’ve thought, “Well my stomach may be out, but at least I’m not walking around in booty shorts!”
The varied opinions and views of modesty in the church has left much room for unfruitful judgement and pride. Have we forgotten the very fruits of a Godly-women?
A modest persona is not just reflected outwardly but in the way we talk, the way we walk, including the way we view others!
Modesty is much deeper than the clothing we adorn ourselves in. You could wear long sleeves and long pants yet still walk around proudly.
We see over & over again the importance of biblical humility;
"When pride comes, disgrace follows, but with humility comes wisdom." Proverbs 11:12
"Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall" Proverbs 16:18
"Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other's faults because of your love." Ephesians 4:2
While checking the clothing on our bodies, let’s not forget the deeper issue of our very hearts.
I'll leave you with a few questions to ponder on:
Do you hold your head arrogantly when looking at the clothing choices of other Christians?
Are you centering your confidence in and of yourself, or in God’s design?
and lastly, How do your thoughts, words, and actions reflect on your heart posture?
